If you're a crafty person, then it makes sense that you would want to create something special for your loved ones for Christmas - and why not a cozy item that will keep them warm this festive season? Your gift will be unique and can be tailored to the recipient's preferences, unlike the usual mass-marketed gift items found in stores. However, before you rush off to get your needles, here are some factors you might want to consider so you can craft them something they will truly cherish.
Time
This might seem obvious, but when you're eager to start knitting, you might overlook it. How long do you have to knit the item? You need to factor in time spent hunting the right materials and delivery, as well as the actual time spent knitting. Are there additional time costs like sewing the piece together? Before you buy everything, make sure you'll actually have enough time for what you have planned; if not, you may want to consider a smaller project.
Sizing
Wouldn't it be awful if you spent all that time knitting and the finished piece didn't actually fit the giftee? It might spoil the surprise a bit, but unless you already have their measurements, it's a good idea to ask about sizing. To keep the recipient in the blue, you could consider asking a partner or someone similarly close who might already know.
Allergies/skin problems
A lot of people find that certain fibers irritate their skin, and some are even allergic. Wool is a common irritant: you should find out whether your recipient has any such problems and use this to aid in your choice of yarn. Merino wool is typically a good choice, as its soft fibers don't tend to cause the same problems as other materials - but of course, do check first.
Warmth
Assuming you're knitting a garment, you should consider the weather where your recipient lives, and whether they're the type who gets cold or hot easily. While a chunky woolen jumper might sound wonderful to you, they might find it stifling, relegating it to the back of a closet! This will influence both the pattern and yarn you choose. Consider using cotton yarn instead of wool or acrylic for cooler garments.
Usage
How old is your recipient? Children tend to lose, tear or make a mess of clothing, so when knitting for them you'll want to think about using a cheaper yarn - and a hard-wearing one. Some yarns, such as superwash, are specifically designed to cope with regular washes, while others, like merino wool, should be washed only infrequently to keep their softness and shape.
More expensive yarns are generally suited to adults who will follow care instructions and are not likely to put them through major wear-and-tear.
Cost
Before rushing to buy luxurious, hand-dyed angora yarn for your project, it's a good idea to make a list of all the knitted gifts you have planned, along with materials. Make sure you can actually afford it all first. If not, maybe consider less expensive materials, or making a smaller item in some cases.
Knitted plushies use a lot less yarn than most projects, look perfectly nice in acrylic yarn and make lovely gifts, even for adults.
Taste
Have you thought about your giftee's style? Do they wear particular colors or styles of clothing? If knitting a garment, you should consider whether your choice will fit with what they already wear, and if it's actually their "thing" - not just yours. It's worth considering that multi-colored yarns that often look beautiful as a skein may knit up as quite vibrant, eye-catching pieces, and that might not suit your giftee.
Also, while it's probably not what you want to hear, do consider whether your recipient will enjoy a hand-knitted garment. Is it possible that what you have planned will make them cringe? Some people simply don't like knitwear, or are very specific about their clothing tastes, and won't really appreciate your gift. In this case, it's worth spending that time searching for a different present they will love, or knitting for someone else. Alternatively, as mentioned before, knitted toys or similar items tend to show a lot of care while not imposing on anyone's sense of fashion.
If you remember to keep these points in mind, your knitted gift is sure to please your loved one and make them feel special.
